Introducción

La Misa es el sacrificio de Cristo. Se ofreció a Sí mismo una vez y para siempre en la cruz. La Misa es el centro de nuestra vida cristiana y la ofrenda de agradecimiento que presentamos a Dios por su gran amor hacia nosotros. No es un sacrificio más. No es una repetición. Es el sacrificio de Jesús hecho presente. Es una re-presentación del Calvario, memorial y aplicación de los méritos de Cristo.

El P. Juan José Paniagua, sacerdote de Lima, Perú, nos ofrece esta serie de 23 episodios, de aproximadamente 3 minutos cada uno, en los que explica paso a paso las diferentes partes de la Misa, para que podamos comprender la belleza que Jesús nos dejó en la Eucaristía.

Las Vestiduras Sagradas

¿Cómo Se Distribuyen las Lecturas?

La mayor parte de la Liturgia de la Palabra se compone de lecturas de la Escritura. Los domingos y las solemnidades, hay tres lecturas de la Escritura. Durante la mayor parte del año, la primera lectura es del Antiguo Testamento y la segunda lectura es de las cartas del Nuevo Testamento. Durante el tiempo pascual, la primera lectura se toma de los Hechos de los Apóstoles, que narran la historia de la Iglesia en sus primeros días. La última lectura se toma siempre de uno de los cuatro Evangelios.

Gloria y Oración Colecta

Los domingos y las solemnidades, cantamos un himno de alabanza que realmente da gloria a Dios. La oración inicial es el momento en que el sacerdote invita a la comunidad a rezar. Al comienzo de la oración, el sacerdote dice: "Oremos" y extiende las manos en señal de súplica. Es un momento para reunirnos todos en silencio y pedir al Señor que nos ayude.

El Canto de Aleluya y Evangelio

El punto culminante de la Liturgia de la Palabra es la lectura del Evangelio. Dado que el Evangelio narra la vida, el ministerio y la predicación de Cristo, recibe varios signos especiales de honor y reverencia. La asamblea reunida se pone en pie para escuchar el Evangelio, que es introducido por una aclamación de alabanza. Durante la mayor parte del año, esa aclamación es "¡Aleluya!", derivada de una frase hebrea que significa "¡Alabado sea el Señor!".

El Credo y las Peticiones

El Credo sigue a la homilía. El Credo Niceno es una declaración de fe que data del siglo IV. En algunos casos, el Credo Niceno puede ser sustituido por el Credo de los Apóstoles.

La Liturgia de la Palabra concluye con la Oración de los Fieles o las Intercesiones Generales. La asamblea reunida intercede ante Dios en favor de la Iglesia, del mundo y de sí misma, confiando sus necesidades al Dios fiel y amoroso.

La Presentación de Dones

Es el momento en el que se llevan al altar el pan y el vino, dos alimentos muy sencillos que el sacerdote ofrecerá a Dios para que Cristo se haga presente en la Eucaristía. De este modo, nuestras sencillas ofrendas de pan y vino, puestas en las manos del Señor, se convertirán también en la mayor abundancia, en el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo para alimentar a una gran multitud hambrienta de Dios.

El Prefacio

En el prefacio, hay un diálogo con el sacerdote: "Elevad vuestros corazones". "Los elevamos al Señor". En el prefacio, damos gracias a Dios, reconocemos sus actos de amor y le alabamos. Todo esto eleva verdaderamente nuestros corazones. Ésa es la actitud interior a la que nos guía la liturgia, elevar el corazón para estar preparados para el momento más importante: cuando Cristo se hace presente con su Cuerpo y su Sangre.

La Consagración

Hemos llegado al corazón de las Plegarias Eucarísticas, el momento más importante de la Misa. En la Misa, Dios pronuncia su Palabra a través del sacerdote. Su palabra, que es eficaz, transforma la realidad y las ofrendas de pan y vino dejan de ser tales y se convierten verdaderamente en el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo; verdaderamente Su Cuerpo, Sangre, Alma y Divinidad.

La Plegaria Eucarística

Después de preparar las ofrendas y el altar, comienza la Plegaria Eucarística. Esta oración de acción de gracias es el corazón de la Liturgia de la Eucaristía. En esta oración, el celebrante actúa en la persona de Cristo como cabeza de su cuerpo, la Iglesia. Reúne no sólo el pan y el vino, sino la sustancia de nuestras vidas y las une al sacrificio perfecto de Cristo, ofreciéndolas al Padre.

El Padre Nuestro

Cuando rezamos el Padrenuestro, el Padre reconoce en nosotros la voz de su Hijo Unigénito. Cuando rezamos el Padrenuestro, no rezamos con nuestras palabras, sino con las palabras de Dios, con las mismas palabras con las que Jesús nos enseñó a rezar. Es una oración que prepara nuestro corazón, porque nos invita a la comunión.

La Comunión

Cuando recibimos el Cuerpo de Cristo, ocurre algo distinto, no sólo la Eucaristía entra a formar parte de nosotros, sino que, sobre todo, nos convertimos en lo que comemos, nos hacemos semejantes a Cristo, nos parecemos más a Jesús. Éste es el verdadero alimento, el alimento de la vida eterna; quien lo recibe vivirá para siempre.

Fr. Douglas Martis is the featured expert in the first season of "Elements of the Catholic Mass." He has a doctorate in Sacramental Theology from the Institut Catholique in Paris and a Ph.D. in History of Religions and Religious Anthropology from the University of Paris (Sorbonne). He is a priest of the Diocese of Joliet and currently teaches at the Pontifical College Josephinum. He is former Associate Professor of Sacramental Theology and Chairperson of the Department of Liturgy and Music at Mundelein Seminary. From 2004 he served as Director of the Liturgical Institute of the University of Saint Mary of the Lake.

Jesse Weiler is the Director, Cinematographer and Editor of "Elements of the Catholic Mass." He is the Assistant Director of Communications at the Liturgical Institute in Mundelein, IL and has a B.A. in Media Studies from Loras College in Dubuque, IA.

There is a difference between “gathering” and “assembly.” A gathering can be any group. One often hears that Mass is boring. I like to say that if you find it boring, you’re looking at the wrong thing. You are probably focused on its structure. Ritual requires structure. And so there is a sense in which Mass is the same: it’s supposed to be repetitive! Repetition is absolutely essential in any ritual; and so it is with the Mass.

Episode 14 - The Collect

"Collect" is the official term for what is generally known as the Opening Prayer of the Mass. This term is significant because it suggests how we ought to approach the opening oration. The prayer is preceded by the invitation of the priest: "Let us pray." Note that these words do not mean "Bring me the book," or "Please stand," or "Watch while I turn through the pages," or even "Listen to this prayer." What is the difference between a liturgist and a liturgiologist? This is an important question because the answer has an impact on how we approach participation in the Mass. A liturgist is one who offers public worship of God. The Church teaches that Christ is the Supreme Liturgist, offering Himself entirely to the Father. The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy insists that Christ himself is the priest. The Liturgy is the action of Christ and of His Body, the Church. Following the pattern of Christ, then, the liturgist is the one who actually prays at Mass.

Episode 24 - The Creed

Notice that one of the first tasks of the liturgical assembly is for the different members to be formed into a single body. The “I” (i.e., the first person singular pronoun) of the Creed is, in a sense, the “I” of the singular Body of Christ, who worships God the Father. It is also the personal “I” of the individual believer. This “I believe” of the Creed is able to account for the personal belief and the corporate belief of Christ’s mystical body. It is both a baptismal confession and a communal statement of shared faith.
